Coaching Fundamentals

Lesson 1: When NOT to coach

If time is the predominant criterion in a situation (e.g., in an immediate crisis), doing the job yourself or telling someone else exactly what to do will probably be the fastest way.

If the quality of the result matters most (e.g,. providing the best possible programs and services for NWT residents) coaching for high awareness and responsibility is likely to deliver the best result.

If maximizing the learning is the main objective (e.g., an employee learning how to do a new job), clearly coaching will optimize retention and performance.
