Coaching Fundamentals

Lesson 2: The coach as expert

Knowing when to share your expertise, and when to hold back is part of being a great coach. As a manager you will have to decide what approach is needed in a given situation.

It is generally preferable to allow employees to arrive at their own solutions. A great coach listens, asks questions, and supports the employee with information (e.g., offering resources but not advice).

Remember, you’re not solving a problem, you’re helping someone grow.
