Lesson 5: Goal setting

It is always a good idea to start a formal coaching session by setting a goal for the session itself. Whether it was the coach or employee who asked for the session, ask your employee:

  • “What would you like to get out of this session?”
  • “I have half an hour for our chat today, what would you like to accomplish?”

Set a positive, collaborative, and goal-oriented tone for the conversation. This will help your employee feel valued, and reinforce that their interests are important to you.
