Introduction
The Government of the Northwest Territories provides eligible employees with a removal allowance (Ultimate Removal Assistance) upon termination and confirmation that the employee has relocated from their community of employment.
Application
These guidelines and procedures apply to GNWT employees who are entitled to Ultimate Removal Benefits as per the terms of their employment under the UNW Collective Agreement, NWTTA Collective Agreement, Excluded Employees Handbook or Senior Managers Handbook.
Definitions
Community of Employment is the community in which the employee was residing while employed with the Government of the Northwest Territories at the time of termination.
Guidelines
- The Government of the Northwest Territories provides removal assistance to employees upon termination of employment.
- In order to be eligible for Ultimate Removal Assistance, employees must meet the requirements as outlined in their terms of employment or collective agreement.
- The total amount of Ultimate Removal Assistance available to an employee is based on a percentage of the maximum reimbursement amount for the employee’s community of employment. The percentage is determined by the length of the employee’s years of continuous service. The maximum reimbursement schedule and length of service entitlements are set out in collective agreements and employee handbooks.
- Term employees under the UNW Collective Agreement, Excluded Employees’ Handbook, or Senior Managers’ Handbook hired from other NWT communities or from other jurisdictions can receive assistance of 100% of the removal amounts of their Community of Employment as detailed in their terms of employment or collective agreement upon completion of their term.
- Any monies owed by an employee to the Government of the Northwest Territories that cannot be recovered from the employee’s final pay will be deducted from their Ultimate Removal Assistance entitlement.
- If an employee has effects in storage at the Government’s cost, the Government of the Northwest Territories’ responsibility ends 30 days after the employee’s termination date. The employee is responsible for moving effects out of storage.
- Employees are responsible for making all moving and travel arrangements and paying for their move.
- Employees will receive their ultimate removal assistance as a taxable payment as per the Income Tax Act.
Procedures
- Upon relocating, eligible employees can submit their request for Ultimate Removal Assistance by completed the appliable form (link below) and submitting to HRHelpdesk@gov.nt.ca .
- FESS will review the application to confirm the employee is eligible for assistance.
- Payment will be completed within 3 pay periods of receipt of application, after the employee’s termination is processed. Payment for Ultimate Removal Assistance is not paid before an employee’s termination date has past.
- Employees who have questions about the Ultimate Removal Assistance can contact the HRHelpdesk@gov.nt.ca . Employees are encouraged to review their terms of employment to review eligibility and terms of removal assistance.
