Definition
A Casual is a person hired for a period of six months or less to do work of a temporary nature.
Action
- Obtain permission from the appropriate departmental authority to hire a Casual, complete the Request for Approval to Hire a Casual Form, and then submit this form to your Human Resource Representative.
Management and Recruitment Services, Human Resources will recommend a pay level based on the duties of the casual employee or position they may be temporarily filling.
- Human Resources will forward resumes from the Casual Pool to you for your review. The Supervisor reviews the resumes and decides who they want to interview. All Casuals must be registered with Human Resources prior to be considered for hire.
- The Supervisor will review the resumes, arrange interviews, and make the final selection. Upon selecting the successful candidate, the Supervisor conducts reference checks and any job requirements, such as licenses, criminal records checks, or registrations.
NOTE: The Indigenous Employment Policy applies to casual staffing. Before proceeding to hire a no priority casual, written approval must be received from the Deputy Head and must include:
- all measures taken to recruit an Indigenous person, and
- detailed rationale as to why any Indigenous candidates were screened out.
- Upon positive reference checks, the Supervisor can contact the successful candidate with a job offer, contingent upon completion of other job requirements, including acceptable criminal records check results and/or proof of driver's license and completion of any necessary paperwork.
Before you begin the hiring process…
If a criminal records check is required for a position, this must be identified by the hiring manager, at the beginning of the casual hiring process, on the Request for Approval to Hire a Casual form that must be sent to your Human Resource Representative
If a casual employee will be required to drive a Government of the Northwest Territories vehicle in the performance of their duties, that requirement must be identified by the hiring manager on the Request for Approval to Hire a Casual form.
